Chicago was founded in 1837 and became the fastest growing city in the world for for several decades. The city grew up along the shores of Lake Michigan and it's history and economy are closely tied to this Great Lake. Originally consider to be a backwater town by Northeastern Americans and then later overshadowed by the mid-century boom of Los Angeles—Chicago's status as a world-class city brings great pride to the people who call it home. Not to mention, the vast collection of significant and influential architecture contained within the metropolitan area.
