This design by Louis Sullivan has been adapted from a baluster found in the Schlesigner & Mayer Store (now a Target) Baluster Design Motif, Chicago, Illinois (1899). It is a geometrically stylized motif of a flower.
Louis Sullivan (1856-1924) was one of the most influential American architects in history. He is considered by many to be the "father of modernism" and is credited as the creator of the modern skyscraper. His ideas helped inspire the Prairie School movement, which included designers such as Frank Lloyd Wright, George Elmslie, and William Purcell.
