This design by Louis Sullivan has been adapted from the original Chicago Stock Exchange Elevator Grilles (1893-1972) and is a stylized motif of sticks and seeds—representing commodities most actively traded on the exchange at the time.
Louis Sullivan (1856-1924) was one of the most influential American architects in history. He is considered by many to be the "father of modernism" and is credited as the creator of the modern skyscraper. His ideas helped inspire the Prairie School movement, which included designers such as Frank Lloyd Wright, George Elmslie, and William Purcell.
